In Loving Memory
Ronald Howard Ballance (Ron)
A.K.A (Beachboy)
Nov 21, 1953 - May 8, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family announce the sudden passing of Ron Ballance.
A Son, A Father, A Grampa, A Best Friend
Ron was born and raised in Nanaimo BC, and grew up in the well known East
Wellington area with many other relatives. Ron was born to Patricia and Howard Ballance
and had two other siblings; Leslie (Phillip- who was a long time fishing partner) and Brenda.
Ron had also moved away with his family to Kyuquot Sound for a few years in his early age
and always talked about returning one day.
Ron was survived by his parents and sisters; as well as his loving wife of 18 years, Sandra,
his two sons; Shane (Marie), Michael (Adena), and daughter BrieAnn (Justin), step son
Steven (Kelsey), step daughter Nicole (Paul).
Ron was also survived by his nine, yes nine grandchildren; Mahala, Abigail, Lucas, Sophia,
Madison, Faith, Taya, Aylee and Addisyn whom he loved dearly. Very early on in Grampa
years he became known as "Grampa Monster". He would chase them around with his hands
high in the air and saying "Grrrrrrrrr" and they would scream piercingly loud and ask for
more if he stopped. Another thing he was well known for is always having a pocket full of
"Grampa Medicine" (Mini Boxes of Smarties) when the kids would come to visit. Anyone
who truly knew him, knew he was an impractical jokester. The grandkids plates of desserts
would go missing when he would distract them with a phrase" Look Over There'' or he would
say "Squirrel'' then blame it on Swiper.
Ron was a father that never stopped fathering and truly wanted what was best for his kids. He
took pride in all his belongings and was very meticulous about how things were done and
kept. He taught us to appreciate the good times. He was always there to help through every
move and there were many and always there for all the ups and downs of life.
Many of Ron's adventures were experienced with his wife Sandra. They were truly each
other's best friends. They happily worked and retired together.
Ron had a big laugh that filled the room and could be heard from afar. His stories were never
short. His go to was always " he never lost a small fish" was always the "Big One."
His favorite pastime was always on the water in his boat with his first mate Sandra and or his
children and grandchildren. He would always tip his visor (no hat, his head needed to breathe
LOL) to his uncle Lloyd who taught him to fish and ask him for help when we were getting
skunked. And when all else failed he'd call on the Rainman.
Ron was a true outdoorsman. He loved fishing, camping, hiking the West Coast Trail, hunting
and travelling. He fished the China Creek Canal for over 50 years, and was an avid hunter in
his early years. Ron did a lot of traveling and had seen many beautiful scenic places. His
wilderness adventures from Vancouver Island to Yellowstone National Park (PS he was
chased by an elk trying to get that perfect picture) fulfilled his desires of being in nature. He
also had the pleasure of travelling to many tropical beaches in Mexico, Hawaii, and Punta
Cana where he truly relaxed.
Ron was a jack of all trades. He was a Logger, a Millwright, an Autobody mechanic, and a
Fisherman. He was a well respected Deckhand at BC Ferries. He retired in 2019 with 25
years of service.
His words of wisdom, life experiences, endless stories and love for his family and friends will
forever be cherished.
Service to be announced at a later date.
