JIm Dowker was born in Kaslo, but grew up in Kitimat. The oldest of five children he enjoyed gunfights; real or imaginary, Sasquatch hunting ,and mascara on his moustache for the ladies. After "borrowing" his father's car he fled the scene, leaving home the same day. He was 15. After four years of travelling the world he returned home.
Back in BC he met a woman named Grace... and soon after, cut his jaw open with a chainsaw. On WCB and never a man to miss and opportunity, he began building a cabin down the Douglas Channel. After a cozy winter of biblical solitude, and many letters to Grace, they were married. A full life with 3 kids and much Holy Spirit adventure followed. Unfortunately ,so did the alcohol, a life long struggle until God took it away in the last year of his life.
He loved business and was a success as long as he kept his eyes on Christ. He was also an excellent excavator operator, building logging roads was his speciality.
In the twilight of his working years, he left the island, and headed back to Kitimat. Living with his sister, he spent some time on the channel, excavating with Rio Tinto before starting one last venture, a shake block business. A cancer scare led him back to his kids for the duration of his days. It was such a treat for him to watch his grand-kids grow up and be part of our lives. We will miss his laughter, his stories and his adamant love for Jesus, or as he called him: "Headquarters!"
