John Emmerson McLaughlin (‘Goose’), born April 22, 1950, in Saint John, New Brunswick, passed away on April 12, 2024, at 8:57 pm in Courtenay, British Columbia, after bravely battling ALS. He was grateful for the compassionate care of Dr. Adam Thompson, Dr. Peter Black, and the dedicated local medical support teams.
John's life was a tapestry of adventure, curiosity, and laughter. He cherished the simple pleasures, finding joy in fishing, hunting, and exploring the great outdoors. A seasoned traveler, John's wanderlust took him across continents, from the serene shores of Harbour Island to the vibrant landscapes of Hawaii.
An aficionado of fine food and drink, John appreciated the art of culinary indulgence, whether savoring a gourmet meal or enjoying a casual outing with friends over wine and beer. He was captivated by mysteries and the unexplained, and his love for storytelling endeared him to all who knew him. John also had a passion for military history, and his fascination with psychology illuminated his conversations and enriched his understanding of the world.
John's academic achievements reflected his dedication to learning. He completed studies at St. Thomas University, the University of New Brunswick, and attained a PhD in Education from California Coast University. John completed his career as Dean Emeritus of Yorkville University.
A devoted husband to Joan Ellen Sheehan, John was a pillar of strength, inspiration, and support to his sons, Devin Emmerson McLaughlin (Meranda (Beaubien)) and Jeremy Andrew McLaughlin (Sarah Stephenson). He leaves behind his twin brother Ed (Gemma Ouellet), his sisters Sue (McLaughlin) Sherrard (John Keith), Colleen (McLaughlin) Buss (Mike), Nora (McLaughlin) MacNeil (Robert Jeffrey), as well as stepsiblings Bob, Sam, and Elsie Campbell, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Patrick McLaughlin, his mother Fern Marie Eva (Peters) Campbell, and his stepfather Bruce Campbell. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John has requested no formal memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society of Canada http://als.ca/ in John's memory.
John's legacy of love, laughter, and lifelong learning will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace and remain in the hearts of all his loved ones.
